How to make an animated book summary video with AI
Write the summary in your own words, then give it to a tool that narrates and illustrates it, such as Alpy. Pick the book's three to five big ideas, explain each with an example, and paste the script into Alpy for an AI voice, or record it yourself. Alpy draws a scene for each part, with one recurring character. Summarise and comment on the book; never read its text or an audiobook aloud, which belongs to the author and publisher.

- Pick the ideas, not the chapters. Most popular summaries cover three to five ideas from the book, each with one story or example, not a chapter-by-chapter retelling.
- Write it to be heard. Short sentences, the most surprising idea first, about 150 words per minute of video: an 8-minute summary is about 1,200 words.
- Add your own view. Where you disagree, how you tried it, who the book is not for. Commentary is what makes a summary yours, and what YouTube's policies on reused content look for.
- Paste it into [Alpy's studio](/create) and pick one of six AI voices, or upload yourself reading it. Up to 2,700 words and 20 minutes.
- Pick a host character. The Owl, Philosopher Stickman or Student Stickman suit book channels. Every scene is drawn with it, acting out the ideas.
- Finish and publish. Redraw any scene you do not like, then download the MP4 with title ideas, a description and a thumbnail.
A structure that works
| Part | Length | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | 15–30 seconds | The book's most surprising claim, as a question |
| Idea 1 to 5 | 1–2 minutes each | One idea, one example, what to do with it |
| Your take | 30–60 seconds | What holds up, what does not, who should read it |
| Close | 10–20 seconds | The one thing to remember |
What you may and may not use
- Fine: your own summary of the ideas, short quotations with the source named, your opinion and examples.
- Not fine: reading the book or an audiobook aloud, long passages, or the cover and illustrations as your visuals. Those need the publisher's permission.
- Name the book and author in the video and description; it is fair to readers and it is what people search for.
This is general guidance, not legal advice; copyright rules differ by country.
Where Alpy is not the right fit
- Six AI voices, not a large voice library, and no voice cloning
- Horizontal 16:9 only, no vertical Shorts
- One deliberately simple drawing style, not polished animation
- No free plan beyond the preview
Questions
- Can AI make a book summary video?
- Yes. Write or draft the summary, then Alpy reads it with an AI voice (or uses your recording) and draws a scene for each part with one recurring character.
- Can I turn an audiobook chapter into a video?
- Only if you own the rights to the recording and the text. For someone else's book, summarise it in your own words instead.
- Can ChatGPT write the summary?
- It can draft one, but check every claim against the book and add your own take; generic AI summaries are what YouTube treats as low-value reused content.
- How long should a book summary video be?
- Most run 6 to 15 minutes. About 150 words make a minute of narration.
- What does it cost?
- Setting up a video is free, and you see the price before you pay. Finishing one video is $7 a video or $29/month.
