How to make an illustrated story video for kids from your narration

Record yourself reading the story, then upload it to a tool that draws pictures from what is said, such as Alpy. Alpy draws a simple, friendly scene for each part of the story with one recurring character, on a white background, and cuts each drawing in on the words it shows, so a bedtime story you read becomes an illustrated video in your own voice. You can also paste the story and pick an AI voice. A free preview shows the first 10 seconds before you pay.

How to do it, step by step

  • Write a story with things to see. "The hamster packed three acorns and a tiny umbrella" draws better than "he got ready". Short sentences, one event each.
  • Read it aloud slowly. A phone in a quiet room is enough. Leave a breath between sentences; children follow pictures, and pictures change with the sentences.
  • Upload it. In Alpy's studio, choose My voice and upload the recording, or record in the browser. Or paste the story and pick one of six AI voices; a calm or storyteller delivery suits bedtime.
  • Pick the hero. The Hamster, the Turtle, the Rabbit, the Owl and others are free characters, or upload a drawing (one your child made works). The same character is in every scene.
  • Watch the free preview, then finish. The first 10 seconds are drawn and cut before you pay. Finish the video, redraw any scene you want different, and download the MP4.

If you post it on YouTube

  • Mark it as made for kids. YouTube requires every creator to say whether a video is made for children, under COPPA and similar laws. Made-for-kids videos have comments turned off and no personalised ads.
  • Keep it gentle and clear. YouTube's best practices for kids' content favour videos that are age-appropriate, inspire curiosity and are not overly commercial.
  • Use your own stories. A published picture book is someone else's work; reading it in a video needs the publisher's permission.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A story with nothing happening. Feelings are hard to draw; actions are easy. Show the dragon sharing the cake.
  • Reading too fast. Children need a moment with each picture.
  • Scary scenes for a bedtime video. The drawings show what the words say; keep the words gentle.
  • Expecting Shorts. Alpy makes horizontal 16:9 videos, not vertical Shorts or Reels.

Where Alpy is not the right fit

  • Six AI voices, not a large voice library, and no voice cloning
  • Horizontal 16:9 only, no vertical Shorts
  • One deliberately simple drawing style, not polished animation
  • No free plan beyond the preview

Questions

Is there an AI that turns a story I read aloud into an illustrated video?
Yes. Upload your reading to Alpy and it draws a scene for each part of the story with one recurring character, timed to your voice. The first 10 seconds are a free preview.
Can my child's drawing be the main character?
Yes. Upload the drawing and it becomes the character in every scene.
Does it change my voice?
No. Your recording is the soundtrack exactly as you made it. Alpy never clones a voice.
Do I have to post it on YouTube?
No. Download the MP4 and keep it, play it at bedtime or send it to family.
How long can the video be?
Recordings of 10 seconds to 20 minutes. Most bedtime stories are three to eight minutes read aloud.
How much does it cost?
The preview is free with no card. Finishing one video is $7 a video or $29/month.
